Markus Michelucci playing mandolin under a tree

Listening to the voice of Vancouver based singer-songwriter Markus Michelucci is an interesting space to be in. It tends to stop people in their tracks as they linger and listen to his sound which is a pace changing phenomenon for the tenor of their day. The musical style is hypnotically bardic and ballad-like in form, sort of like the music Robin Hood might sing with his merry men in a safe clearing in the woods or like Shakespeare might have cast for an interlude to break the tension in a Midsummer Night's Dream.

While Sound Refuge has only recently arrived on the stages of Vancouver's local scene, 2011 heard the music getting sound exposure around the province. The the single 'Vancouver's on Fire' from his album Umbrellas in Winter began picking up steam, receiving airplay on CBC radio as well as a number of university and internet stations. Then in late summer Sound Refuge and Squamish's Dana-Marie Battaglia shared their first ever tours in a successful Western Canada passage where they came back in profit, which is a rare feat in today's musical landscape. This year's highlights kicked off with a successful summer showing at the Railway Club in Vancouver, one of many performances after Markus' return from South America in February. And now, Markus and his band have begun the recording of a new album to be released in early 2013.

The results of all this great exposure and encouraging economics has Sound Refuge focused on driving the musical commitment towards a full-time venture for 2013 by playing more shows, promoting the new album and expanding their following into wider and wider spheres through the use of social media, with more touring to come later in the year. While in today's musical wilderness Sound Refuge is still a small voice, the clear popular talent and drive at hand will not take long to catch more and more people taking refuge in the space they've created.
